Piazza Tasso Sorrento

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is the main piazza of Sorrento. If you plan on visiting Sorrento, you will definitely come across this central spot. It is thought as the entry point for the historic part of town and just a terrific place to relax with a glass of wine and people watch.

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is named after the native poet Torquato Tasso. He was born 1544 and died in 1595, just before he was to be crowned Poet Laureate. A beautiful marble image of him stands in the center of the square. The other large statue is of Sant Antonio Abate, the patron saint of Sorrento. At the north eastern side of the square is Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, with its gorgeous Rococo facade of gleaming white-and-yellow stucco.

There some fabulous shops, restaurants and bars all around. Make sure to visit the Fauno Bar. It is located on the edge of the square. It’s a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy a cappuccino and their famous dessert lemon cake. It is absolutely scrumptious.

The main shopping street (Corso Italia) of Sorrento, and lots of small streets that have more shops, etc. also runs off of Piazza Tasso Sorrento. It also provides easy access to Marina Grande Sorrento, where you can catch the boat to Capri island. You can reach the marina by taking a public bus, private shuttle or the staircase (a lot of steps). From here you can take the tour trolley. Or you can get a hop-on hop-off bus to enjoy all the wonderful sights Sorrento has to offer. The buses are open top, allowing you to enjoy the wonderful panoramic views. In addition, you can also arrange a horse carriage for a shorter tour.

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is also home to many local cultural traditions like Easter processions, carnival, summer and autumn festivals.

The train station is located next to Piazza Tasso Sorrento. Tickets can be bought from the stand where the train stops (next to the gorge).

Car parking of course, is a major problem. Please be careful walking. There is a lot of traffic, especially scooters. Italians drive fast, and they certainly are not watching out for you.
